Summer School Options

We have information on summer school options at Project ECHO and John A Logan College Adult Secondary.  Students who are behind in credits must make arrangements to meet with Mrs. Ryker to discuss what classes need and can be made up in summer school.  Not all classes are available in summer school.  Registration for Project ECHO is on May 17th and 18th.  Classes begin May 29th and there is a $75 fee for each class.  Classes at JALC Adult Secondary begin July 2nd and run through August 6th.  There is a $100 deposit associated with these classes.  Students must meet with Mrs. Ryker prior to registering for summer school classes to ensure the credits earned will count towards graduation.

Summer Employment

As part of the "Hire the Future" program for area youth, the Illinois Department of Employment Security will host a job fair featuring employers within the fast food industry who are looking to fill openings during the summer break.  The Job Fair will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the Carterville Community Center from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Representatives from over 25 employers will be present to meet with, answer questions, take applications and conduct interviews with students.  Students are encouraged to come prepared, wearing appropriate clothing and having a resume is a good place to start.

Financial Aid !!!!!

The FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  It is the form that the federal government uses to determine your eligibility for federal student aid.  This aid includes grants, scholarships, work-study and loans to help you pay for college.  The form collects financial and demographic information.

Complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1.  Submit the FAFSA even if you don't think you qualify for aid.  Sometimes being rejected for federal aid is a prerequisite for receiving private awards.  You can complete the FAFSA on the web  at www.fafsa.ed.gov .

All college students SHOULD complete the FAFSA form even if you know you will not be eligible for financial aid.  Many scholarships cannot be awarded if you do not have a completed FAFSA form on file...so it is to your advantage to have the form filed so you will not be denied any scholarships that you might otherwise be eligible for.

Remember, to apply early because money available to colleges run out quickly!!

If you complete the FAFSA on the web, you and your parents will need a PIN number.  Pin numbers can be obtained at www.pin.ed.gov

  Information You Should Know…

College Visitation Days.  A senior is permitted TWO visits to a college or university of his/her choice providing the following requirements are met: (1) The parents contact the principal or counselor prior to the visitation and obtain a College Visitation Permission Form, (2) The permission form is completed and returned to the office THREE days prior to the scheduled college visit, and (3) the senior is on track to graduate.  Seniors unable to graduate due to lack of graduation credits will not be allowed to take college visits.

Transcripts-Any student that needs to send a copy of their high school transcript should obtain a “Transcript Request Release Form” from the Guidance Office.  Transcripts will be sent out on the day the request form is received.

College Application Fee Waivers-Many colleges and universities waive the application fee for students who are on free or reduced lunch.  Southern Illinois University at Carbondale has a form for the guidance counselor to complete and other colleges ask for the counselor to write a letter on the school’s letterhead.  Not all colleges waive the application fee, but it is something to consider when applying.
